1. Japan Apr Vehicle Output Slumps 60.1%
Vehicle production in the country dropped to 292,001 units last month, compared with 731,829 one year earlier, while exports fell to 126,061 units, down from 391,540 in April 2010.
 
2. Asian Stocks Jump on Optimism over Greece Aids 
MSCI Asia Pacific Index added 1.3%, amid speculation European will give more assistance to Greece. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index gained 2.2% and Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index increased 1.4%.
 
3. Hyundai Engineering Wins US$230M Orders

4. Jobless Rate Climbs to 4.7% in Japan
The Apr rate rose 0.1% from the previous month. It was the 11th month seeing a year-on-year decline. Separately, Japan's industrial production gained 1% in Apr from a month earlier, improved from a 10.5% decline in Mar. 
 
5. C.P. Pokphand Acquires Vietnam Firm for US$609M
The HK-listed arm of Thailand's Charoen Pokphand Group would purchase a 70.8% stake in C.P. Vietnam Livestock that had 20% of Vietnam's feed market and 30% of broiler-farming market.
 
6. India GDP Grows 7.8% on Year
The growth in the 3 months ended Mar 31 was down from 8.3% in the previous quarter and the slowest pace in 5 quarters. For FY2011, the economy expanded 8.5%, below the government's 8.6% expectation.
 
7. China Raises Electricity Rates to Industrial Users
The nation added US$3 per 1,000 kilowatt hours for some industrial users to counter power shortage. Residential rates were unchanged. It was estimated a power shortfall of up to 40 million kilowatts in the summer.
 
8. S Korea Industrial Output Gains 6.9% on Year
The Apr increase was less than expected and compared with a revised 9% gain in Mar. Production decreased 1.5% from Mar, after it jumped 1.7% in the previous month.
