1. China Factory Output Edges Up in Aug
The flash Purchasing Managers' Index edged up to 49.8 in August, from July's final reading of 49.3. The gauge has slowed slightly for a 2nd straight month as sluggish overseas demand sapped new orders.
 
2. Asian Stocks Rise after Wall Street Gains
Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.2% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng climbed 2%. South Korea's Kospi advanced 3.6% while China's Shanghai Composite Index gained 1.5%.
 
3. Singapore Consumer Prices Climb 5.4% on Year
The inflation rate in July compared to 5.2% in June. The central bank expects the index to jump 5% for thw whole year. Price climbed 1.5% from the previous month.
 
4. China Telecom H1 Net Climbs 8%
The largest fixed-line operator in China posted a net profit for the 6 months ended June 30 of US$1.53 billion, up from US$1.42 billion a year earlier. Revenue rose 11% to US$18.8 billion.
 
5. S Korea Short Term Overseas Debt Jumps to US$149.7B
The country added US$1.3 billion overseas debt maturing 1 year or less in the 3 months ended June 30 from the previous quarter. It was the second consecutive quarterly gain.  
 
6. Petronas Plans US$5.05B Gas Project
Malaysia's state-owned energy giant and its partner will develop 9 discovered gas fields in the North Malaysia Basin. It will also build a 200-kilometer gas pipeline.
 
7. PTTEP Starts Petroleum Production at Vietnam Field
Thailand's biggest explorer expects the field to produce 15,000 barrels a day, which will increase to 40,000 barrels by the end of this year. The natural gas production will increase to 30 million cubic feet a day. 
 
8. India Seeks Funds for US$7.6B Port Development
The government hoped two-thirds of the funding for new ports will be raised by private sector. But it didn't specify the timeframe for starting the projects.
 
9. Fire Kills 14 in China
The fire ripped through a dormitory building belonging to a ceramics factory. It took 3 hours to extinguish, leaving 14 people dead and 2 others seriously wounded. 
 
10. Thaksin Denies Meddling in Thai Politics
Ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra said on a visit to Japan that he has no immediate plans to go home and denied meddling in the two-week-old government run by his younger sister Yingluck Shinawatra.
