1. Asian Stocks Advance on Hope Greece Won't Default
Nikkei 225 Index of Japan climbed 1.7% while S Korea Kospi rose 1.4%. Hong Kong Hang Seng Index was 0.7% higher, but Shanghai Composite Index was down 0.2%.
 
2. Singapore Retail Sales Jump 10.7%
The annual growth rate in July was up from 11.1% in June. Adjusted seasonal factors, overall retail sales gained 2.1% in July from the previous month, up from 1.7% in June.
 
3. HK Esprit's Profit Falls 98%
Net income of the largest HK clothier was US$10.12M in the fiscal year ended June due to store closures. It forecasted sales for the year ended June 2012 to drop 3% to 5% in local currency terms.
 
4. S Korea LNG Imports Decline to Lowest Since June Last Year 
The nation brought 2.02M tons of LNG last month, compared with 2.04M a year earlier. The cost of purchase was US$1.47B, up from US$1.15B a year earlier.

Police says suspected Muslim insurgents have killed the 5 soldiers and severely wounded another in a roadside bombing. The insurgents felled trees to slow rescue vehicles.
 
10. Strong Quake Hits Japan, No Tsunami
A 6.2-magnitude quake has struck off northeastern coast, but there was no risk of a tsunami. Nearly 20,000 people died or were left missing after a massive earthquake and tsunami on March 11 in the country.
